“Whoa.” said Nick. “Would your grandpa really have kept your grandma from seeing the mail?”

“Well I don’t know, Sherlock.” Josie said sarcastically. “I never met the guy.”

Nick chuckled and reached for her hand. “I’m sorry Josie. That was a dumb question. It just sounds like he wasn’t real nice.”

Josie shrugged and spoke softly. “Not everyone is nice. Not even to their own family.”

Leaning back onto the couch she propped her feet up on the coffee table, pressing her fingers into her temples to alleviate the obvious tension building there.

“You know, this sounds like a really poorly written soap opera Hun.” His comment made Josie chuckle. “One I don’t wanna watch and wouldn’t recommend to my friends.” He patted her knee. “But I gotta say it. You know what I’m gonna say don’t you?”

Josie shrugged.

“Remember our youth group discussion about God turning bad situations into something good?” 2

She chuckled, remembering their youth group ‘experiment’ as it were about a year and a half ago where the group had brainstormed one evening about the worst things that had happened in Biblical times and how God had turned them around to be something good. Their list included Joseph’s feud with his brothers, Mary’s unplanned pregnancy, and many others. After being serious with the assignment for a half an hour, they turned their imaginations on and started coming up with semi realistic, and completely unrealistic, scenarios in modern times that maybe could happen.

“Yea, like if the sun quit shining, God could make it possible that crops would grow not by sunlight but by humans singing to them every day.” She said, laughing at the prospect.

He made her look at him. “Yep. God always provides a way. He always has a purpose for everything we go through and sees the tears we cry.” 3, 4 She nodded her head in agreement even as fresh tears ran down her face.

“And He is always with us no matter what. His Word says He has a plan for us, plans to prosper us; to give us hope and a future. He knows our desires and our pain. In Second Kings it says I have heard your prayers and seen your tears and I will heal you”.5

Josie was in his arms now, tightly held as he spoke and she sobbed. “Heavenly Father, fill Josie with your Spirit of peace now in Jesus’ name. Give her that peace that passes all understanding and lift her up, heal her heart and mind and body from the pain she’s in. Thank you for never leaving her side, for putting us in each other’s lives and for giving us your Son, who heals all wounds, seen and unseen. We know You have a plan for her pain, that You will redeem and restore her as You promised to do. Give her wisdom and revelation to Your will, that her life may glorify Your name and further Your kingdom. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.”

“Amen.” Josie whispered, squeezing Nick’s torso tightly once more before letting go to pick up the fortune and show it to him.
